Bosses must do background checks on domestic workers

NORMALLY there are procedures to be followed when hiring someone, but this doesn’t always happen with domestic workers.Brixton station spokeswoman Jeanette Backhoff said they had noticed a trend where domestic workers were involved in housebreakings.
 She urged homeowners to have their employees’ personal details and to send their fingerprints to the police for background checks.

 “Since the beginning of the year, we found quite a few housebreaking cases where domestic workers were implicated.Foreigners are often a problem because they don’t have proper documents.They ask for small wages, but in return they steal.Not only do they create mistrust with employers, they make it hard for South African citizens to find jobs because they ask for less money.


It’s in the homeowners’ best interests to do a proper background check before bringing people into their homes.Housebreaking by domestic workers can be fought against if employers can be responsible with their homes.
